Concern's first involvement in Pakistan was in response to flooding in 1992. Subsequently, in 1998, Concern established an office in Islamabad. The purpose of the Islamabad office was primarily to support our relief operations in neighbouring Afghanistan, but we also initiated some small-scale interventions in Pakistan.
Our mission is to support and develop the capabilities of extremely poor, vulnerable, and marginalized people to achieve sustainable improvements in their lives. To this end we engage in long term development work and emergency response, primarily through local partners, based on our commitment to mutual learning and the need to address the root causes of poverty.
“Concern became fully operational in Pakistan in the latter part of 2001, in response to refugee crisis along the provincial Balochistan border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Concern later moved into long-term development programming, initially in Balochistan and Punjab, and then in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa Province (KPK), following our emergency response to the 2005 earthquake.”
In the aftermath of the 2005 earthquake, we responded to the immediate emergency in the worst hit areas of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Province (KPK) and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK), providing shelter, food & non food items, water and sanitation services to over 45,000 families.
“Our programmes focus mainly on Livelihoods, Health and Emergencies, while HIV & AIDS, Disaster Risk Reduction and Equality are important cross-cutting themes.
We are currently supporting early recovery through livelihoods rehabilitation for the people affected by the conflict in Swat, Kohistan, Kohat and D.I Khan districts of KPK, as well implementing a flood-related emergency response programme targeting over 2 million people in KPK, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. Concern is also implementing longer term development programmes in Mansehra, Swat & Kohistan districts in KPK; Quetta City, Awaran, Pishin and Qilla Saifullah districts in Balochistan Province, and in Muzaffargarh district in Punjab province,”
Concern Worldwide's Pakistan Programme currently has nearly 100 local staff members, works with several local NGO partners and has forged strong links with government departments at the local, provincial and federal levels. Concern has established offices in Islamabad, Quetta, Abbottabad, Multan and Hyderabad.
