In the last week of July, 2010, Pakistan experienced the worst flooding in the country’s history. Over the next weeks, the floods ravaged the country, affecting over 20 million people. Under Concern Pakistan's Emergency Response Strategy, we had already pre-selected, trained and signed MOUs with local NGO partners across Pakistan before the floods, so we were able to respond swiftly. At the onset of the flooding, Concern Pakistan initiated emergency activities in the Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Province (KPK), providing essential food and non-food items, clean drinking water and medical services. When the floods spread further south, Concern expanded its relief efforts to Punjab, Balochistan and Sindh. In addition to provinding essential food and non-food items (hygiene kits etc.), Concern focused on water & sanitation (WASH) activities, repairing or replacing water supply schemes and constructing latrines for those affected by the floods. Concern's emergency response to the flooding is aimed at reaching over 2 million people in Pakistan. Early recovery activities will include support in the construction of shelters, support in agricultural recovery and water & sanitation services.

Concern became fully operational in Pakistan in the latter part of 2001, in response to the refugee crisis along the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Concern later moved into long-term development programming, initially in Balochistan and Punjab, and then in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa Province (KPP), following our emergency response to the 2005 earthquake.
Our programmes focus mainly on Livelihoods, Health and Emergencies, while HIV & AIDS, Disaster Risk Reduction and Equality are important cross-cutting themes.
We are currently supporting early recovery through livelihoods rehabilitation for people affected by the conflict in Swat & Buner districts of KPK, as well as conducting a flood-related emergency response targeting over 2 million beneficiaries in KPK, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. Concern is also implementing longer term development programmes in Mansehra, Swat & Kohistan districts of KPK; Quetta City, Awaran, Pishin and Qilla Saifullah districts in Balochistan Province; and in Muzaffargarh district in Punjab province. Concern's development programmes in Pakistan are focused on livelihoods, food security & environmental health (access to water and sanitation facilities).
